Direct TV Scam Notice from District Sergeant
We have “Direct TV” impersonators going door to door selling TV Satellite systems scamming people. Suspects are a black male in his 40’s and a black female in her late teens. One of them had a Direct TV ID card as well. Most recent victim we are aware of was on 7-3, the technicians were supposed to come by on 7-5 to install the system but never showed up and it was determined it was a scam.

rapistComposite Sketch of Waldo Rapist
Kansas City Police have released this composite sketch of a suspected serial rapist, based on victims’ description of him. Police believe the man depicted in the sketch sexually assaulted two women this past weekend – one at 9:50 p.m. Jan. 23 in the 8300 block of Mercier Street, and another at 12:30 a.m. Jan. 24 in the 10 block of East Porte Cimi Pas. Police think the same man could be responsible for two similar sexual assaults in the same area last fall. Police urge anyone with information about the suspect to come forward by calling police or the TIPS Hotine at 816-474-TIPS.

EASTER EGG HUNT ORGANIZER NEEDED
We need a parent volunteer to take a turn organizing the Easter Egg Hunt this year. This involves buying individually wrapped candies and filling plastic eggs with the candy, finding someone to wear the Easter Bunny costume who will pass out goodie bags; and purchasing some snacks and treats to serve at the event. Most moms recruit a group of friends or their children and their friends to stuff the candy. It’s a fun event and can include other things you might enjoy doing (like playing games) if the budget will cover it. Fresh ideas are welcome. If interested, email president@wphakc.org for more information.

ANNUAL REGISTRATION OF KANSAS CITY RENTAL PROPERTIES DUE
All owners of rental dwellings located in Kansas City, Mo., must renew or establish registration of their rental properties with the City’s Neighborhood and Community Services Department for 2010 before Feb 1. Annual registration of rental properties is part of the Rental Registration and Inspection Program that was established by the City Council with passage of ordinance No. 071046 in October 2007. Owners can register rental properties through Jan. 31 without incurring a registration fee. However, failure to register a rental dwelling before Feb. 1 will result in the issuance of an administrative citation fine of $50. For each month (or portion thereof) that a rental dwelling is not registered, an additional $50 fee will be assessed. For example, a rental property not registered until August will be assessed a fine of $350. Registration is required on a calendar-year basis and expires each Dec. 31. Online registration is available at http://www.kcmo.org/neigh. Registrations forms also are available online that can be downloaded and submitted by mail or in person. For more information about the Rental Registration and Inspection Program, visit http://www.kcmo.org/neigh or contact Shalisha Boles, Neighborhood and Community Services Department, (816) 513-3200.

WPHA Annual Food Drive for Harvesters – Saturday, November 14th
Raffle for prizes for donations
On Saturday, November 14th, WHPA will hold our annual food drive in support of Harvesters, Kansas City’s largest and most comprehensive food bank, providing food assistance to nearly 60,000 people each week through more than 550 nonprofit agencies in 26 counties. Assistance includes emergency food pantries, soup kitchens, homeless shelters, children’s homes, homes for mentally disabled and shelters for battered persons.

Many think of hunger as a homeless man in line at a soup kitchen, but of the 60,000 people Harvesters helps each week, half are children or seniors and in 48% of households served, at least one person is working. Many don’t have the food they need to sustain their health and strength, relying on food pantries, soup kitchens and shelters to put food on the table for their families.

Because the need is so great, our neighborhood organizes a drive each year to help, and once again we’ll need your help to make this Food Drive the success that is representative of the generosity we know exists in WHPA.

We will place a bag with a reminder on your porch the week prior to the Saturday pick-up on the 14th. When we pick up the bags, we’ll leave potential prize winning tickets, one per food item, and we’ll do a drawing at the end of the drive and announce the winning ticket numbers in the December newsletter.
Harvesters is able to put cash donations to good use too, so if you’d like to go that route, you’ll get a ticket for each dollar donated and be entered into the raffle for the wonderful prizes listed below. Make your check payable to Harvesters and leave it inside your donation sack for pick-up (weigh it down with something or tape the sack to your front door). You can also mail the check ahead of time to WPHA PO Box 140083 KCMO 64114 and we’ll email you back or mail back your raffle ticket numbers (please include email address).

The prizes we have represent the generosity of the neighborhood and include:

  • From Family Bicycles at 7140 Wornall Road – a certificate for a Bicycle Tune-up
  • From One More Cup at 7408 Wornall Road – a gift certificate to enjoy some of their offerings from The Roasterie’s line of Certified Fair-Trade Organic coffee and espresso
  • From Yoga Patch at 7108 Wornall Road – 3 Passes to any Family/Kids or Adult classes Yoga class
  • From local jewelry artist Diana Prouty, a beautiful bracelet and matching earrings made especially as a prize for this food drive
  • From Soil Service Garden Center, 7130 Troost, a gift card for the garden center or nursery

We also need volunteers to help make this a success. Can you give an hour or two Sunday afternoon, Nov 8th to help distribute reminder bags or on Saturday November 14th to help gather the sacks from the neighborhood? If you can, we’d love to hear from you. Please contact Julie Hull at juliejay7411@mac.com or call 816 822 7535.

This is a great way to help your kids get those volunteer hours they need, or simply have a couple hours of fun and know you’re helping others. Make it a family affair! If you’re interested in helping but the times and dates above don’t work for you, please let Julie know as there are other ways you can help. All help is appreciated! Thank you in advance for your donation of time or food! Please help fill the shelves so that no hungry families will go without food!
